About Rock Springs

One of the most populous cities in Wyoming, Rock Springs lies in the state’s south-west region, not far from the snaking Green River. It’s culturally diverse due to the immigrants who arrived here in the late 19th century to mine coal, which was used to power the Union Pacific Railroad’s steam engines.

Things to do in Rock Springs

Learn about the people, events and industries that have shaped the city at the Rock Springs Historical Museum, which occupies an 1894-built town hall. Its exhibits detail the coal miners who arrived here from Kentucky and Pennsylvania in the 19th century, as well as the rumoured visits of Butch Cassidy and Calamity Jane. Self-guided walking maps of the historic downtown area are also available.

A short walk from the Rock Springs Historical Museum is Bunning Park, a leafy recreational space with a children’s playground, walking trails and picnic areas. You can settle in at one of the benches to watch the world go by or spot squirrels scurrying between the trees. Live music concerts regularly take place in the summertime, together with cultural festivities.

Spotting wild horses is a highlight of hiking to Pilot Butte, a prominent, flat-topped mountain that can also be visited along a scenic drive. While exploring its magnificent high-desert landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for elks and coyotes, as well as hawks and eagles flying high above. On the other side of Rock Springs is Quaking Asp Mountain, named after the trees that blanket its slopes.

Getting around Rock Springs

Rock Springs is around 15 minutes’ drive from Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport, which has regular flights to Denver. The much larger Salt Lake City International Airport is three hours away. Long-distance buses connect to Rock Springs, although renting a car will give you greater freedom to explore the city.
