About Romo

Located just off the Jutland peninsula, Rømø is the southernmost of Denmark’s Wadden Sea Islands. It’s linked to the Danish mainland via the Rømødæmningen, an impressive, nine-kilometre-long road dam that was completed at the end of World War II. The island is home to picturesque beaches and a landmark church dedicated to the patron saint of sailors.

Things to do in Romo

Spend your days relaxing on one of Rømø’s beautiful stretches of sand, several of which are dedicated nudist beaches. Kite-buggying is a popular activity along the island’s coastline and Rømø hosts one of Europe’s biggest kite festivals each September.

The most important religious monument on Rømø is St. Clement's Church, which is dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Admire its whitewashed exterior and its Gothic tower, with the oldest part of the building dating back to the late 13th century. The charming interior is lined with ornately carved wooden pews and decorated with several votive ships.

If you’re interested in the history of Rømø, don’t miss a visit to the Kommandørgård Museum, which details the island’s whaling industry and its role in Rømø’s economy. Learn about the sailors from Rømø who captained Dutch and German ships on whaling expeditions as far away as Greenland. The museum occupies a beautifully restored 18th-century building and is decorated with Dutch tiles and opulent furnishings.
