Where to stay in Saint-Nazaire

About Saint-Nazaire

Saint-Nazaire is a breezy port city with an industrious maritime heritage. Visit one of the top maritime museums in France, descend into the cabin of a military submarine and visit an ancient Neolithic burial site. Gold-sand beaches and a flourishing food and wine scene add to the appeal of this Loire-Atlantique city.

Things to do

Anchored in the harbour, the Espadon is the pride and joy of Saint-Nazaire. The submarine was launched by the French Navy in the 1960s and enjoyed a proud military career. Guided tours invite you to climb aboard and peer into the cabins and control rooms. The neighbouring Escal’Atlantic museum occupies a full-size replica of an ocean liner. Exhibits chart the city’s rich shipbuilding past and spotlight iconic vessels built in Saint-Nazaire, including SS Normandie and SS France.

Tumulus de Dissignac is just west of the city and is one of the most evocative Neolithic burial sites in France. The grass-covered mounds are more than 6,000 years old and are decorated with intricate stone carvings.

From sandy beaches to sheltered coves, Saint-Nazaire boasts a beautiful coastline. Saint-Marc Beach is one of the most popular stretches of sand, with plenty of lively cafes and bistros to enjoy. Grand seaside villas dot the shoreline and recall the city’s illustrious past.

Saint-Nazaire is made up of multiple neighbourhoods, each with its own unique charm. Stroll along the streets of La Havane lined with elegant 19th-century villas and get lost in the winding “wheelbarrow paths” of Méan-Penhoët. In the colourful Petit Maroc district you’ll find great African-inspired cafes and restaurants.

Getting around

Saint-Nazaire is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The city is a one-hour drive from Nantes and 4.5 hours from Paris. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace.
