About Salé

Situated across the Bou Regreg River from Rabat, the city of Sale exudes a charming ancient ambiance in the midst of urbanisation. Fishing is a way of life in Sale, with angling excursions in the river or further out on the Atlantic Ocean. An ancient walled district, opulent mosques and historical museums immerse you in long-standing Moroccan culture.

Things to do in Salé

Holding many of Sale’s treasures, the Medina of Sale is a centuries-old walled quarter with seven imposing gates, narrow alleys and maze-like squares. Behind the thick, tangerine-orange walls a classic souk serves as the heart of daily life, with locals hawking everything from fresh fruit to rugs, crafts, housewares and dried spices.

The Great Mosque of Sale, built at least 1,000 years ago, lies within the Medina and is a must-have photo opportunity. Next to the mosque, you can explore the Medersa Abu al-Hassan, an ancient religious school with intricate stone and woodcarvings. Climb to the rooftop for spectacular views of the river, ocean and Rabat skyline.

Moroccan history comes alive inside the Belghazi Museum. Meticulously preserved religious books, pottery and jewellery are on display, while the art-imbued ceilings and carved doorways depict yester-year everyday life in the region.

Travelling with kids? Spread out along the riverbank, Magic Park bustles with energy and fun, from bumper cars and a miniature roller coaster to a shooting range and casual eateries.
