About Sanibel

Sanibel is an exquisite barrier island comprised of palm tree-lined boardwalks and green spaces situated across from Pine Island. The town is known for its beaches full of colourful shells, wildlife refuge and the only shell museum in the world.

Things to do in Sanibel

For a day out in nature, visit J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Spot some of the diverse wildlife, go on a kayaking excursion or bring your binoculars for excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Are you a fan of shelling? Head to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum to learn about shells from around the world. Browse a collection of world record-sized shells, explore exhibits of shells native to Southwest Florida and watch the half-hour video called “Mollusks in Action”.

You can’t visit Sanibel, known as the “Shelling Capital of the World”, without scouring the beach for its colourful treasures that have washed up ashore. Mimic the famous bent-at-the-waist “Sanibel Stoop” posture and search for souvenir shells, as the island’s banana-like shape allows it to catch over 300 species of shells from the Caribbean, from pastel coquinas to conch shells and sand dollars.

Visit the Sanibel Moorings Botanical Gardens to view rare tropical fauna and flora. Take a leisurely stroll along the pathways, keep your eyes peeled for native birds and butterflies and bring your camera for snapshots of African tulips, reed orchids and star jasmine.
