You’ll find plenty to do in the 28-hectare La Magdalena Peninsula, where you can explore the splendid Palacio de Magdalena and its gardens that look out over the sea or lounge in the sunshine at Playa del Magdalena. Take the train that goes around the peninsula to discover a mini zoo where you can see penguins, sea lions and replicas of Columbus’ ships.

Discover the prehistoric world of the Paleolithic era and Iron Age at the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology. Browse the collection of 1,200 artefacts to see cave paintings, stone tools and carved horns and bones.

Visit the Santander Cathedral for a look at its stunning Gothic architecture with pillar columns and vaulted ceiling. Admire its 15th-century cloister and glass panels on the floor where you can also see the archaeological remains of the ancient Roman settlement.

Boasting a preserved atmosphere of the Belle Epoque era, El Sardinero Beach is an expansive stretch of coast perfect for sunbathing. Stroll along the scenic promenade, enjoy seaside dining or hit the waves for a day of surfing.

Getting around

The compact streets of Santander are easy to explore on foot, while public buses and taxis are also available. You can fly into Santander Airport, located five kilometres from the city centre, or travel by bus, train or car from nearby cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante.
