About Savusavu

Originally established as a trade hub for sandalwood and copra, Savusavu is a vibrant market town on the south coast of Vanua Levu. It serves as a gateway for exploring Fiji’s second-largest island, with steaming hot springs, authentic villages and healthy coral reefs to discover.

Things to do in Savusavu

On the waterfront is the Savusavu Market, which hosts a colourful array of stalls selling everything from fruits and vegetables to handicrafts. Locally caught tuna, lobsters and prawns are also for sale, alongside fresh coconuts ready to be drunk. Nearby are the Nakama Thermal Hot Springs, which offer a fascinating insight into Fiji’s geology and the cooking traditions of locals.

A short drive from Savusavu is the Flora Tropica Botanical Gardens, which is set across two acres of hillside overlooking Savusavu Bay. It’s home to more than 250 species of palms from around the globe, including several rare and endangered varieties. As you explore its stone paths and elevated timber walkways, keep an eye out for the diverse array of tropical fruit trees.

If you drive in the other direction from Savusavu, you'll arrive at the picturesque Vuadomo Waterfall, which has a small pool at its base where you can refresh with a swim. It’s accessed from the traditional village of Vuadomo, where you’ll find manicured vegetable gardens backed by Vanua Levu’s rugged peaks. You can combine your visit with a stop at Nukubolu, a volcanic crater with steaming hot springs and thermal pools.
