About Schneverdingen

Forming part of the immense Lüneburg Heath, Schneverdingen is a historic city in the German state of Lower Saxony. It has existed since at least the 12th century when it formed part of the Prince-Bishopric of Verden and was included in the Kingdom of Hanover’s Stade Region when it was established in 1823.

Extending south of Schneverdingen’s city centre is Walter Peters Park, which is named after a former city director. It’s home to a duck-filled pond and an adventure playground, plus a small orchard and a landscaped garden. You can stretch your legs on the nature trail that leads through the park’s picturesque meadow or enjoy a round on the miniature golf course.

Walter Peters Park connects to the city centre via the grounds of the Church of Peter and Paul, which was built in 1645 with a field stone facade. Step inside to admire its ornate altar and impressive organ or coincide your visit with a Sunday service. The church’s adjoining bell tower is topped by an intricate spire that can be seen from kilometres away.

Sprawling east of Schneverdingen is the Lüneburg Heath, which encompasses woodland, geest and heath that’s grazed upon by Heidschnucke moorland sheep. You can learn about life here in times gone by at Dat ole Huus or visit the Walderlebnis Ehrhorn, a 350-year-old agricultural farmstead. Bronze Age mounds can be found throughout the nature reserve, together with historic sheep pens and barns.
