Senamiestis is referred to as Vilnius Old Town and serves as a historic and modern hub of entertainment, situated in the heart of the capital city of Vilnius, Lithuania. Old Town offers a juxtaposition of all eras of architecture, spanning gothic to neoclassical and displayed by buildings scattered throughout the region. It is one of the biggest, most well-preserved medieval areas in all of Northern Europe.
Things to do around Vilnius Old Town include walking through the historic Gate of Dawn, sightseeing along Pilies Street through its abundance of cafes and street markets and exploring Literary Street, also known as “the street of writers”, oozing with Lithuanian history. St. Anne’s Church is a presiding architectural attraction and Town Hall Square offers many events and festivities. Walking tours around the area provide for an encompassing experience of the architectural melting pot.
Walking is the most popular form of transit around Vilnius Old Town. From the airport to Senamiestis there is a public bus, a shuttle bus and an expressway railway coach that run routes between the regions. Taxis are a predominant form of transportation both to and from the airport and within the city.
Vilnius Old Town subsists as a live preservation of traditional Lithuanian values that remained present in culture even through the industrialisation of the modern age. The area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
