Shevchenkivs’kyi District is an urban district in Kiev, Ukraine. The area is home to many of the main attractions of Kiev. St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, St. Sophia’s Cathedral, Golden Gate and Kiev Zoo all reside within the district.
Begin an exploration of Shevchenkivs’kyi District at Golden Gate, the ancient entrance to the city. From Golden Gate, walk to St. Sophia’s Cathedral Complex which is classed as an outstanding architectural monument. Surrounded by verdant landscaped gardens, the majestic cathedral offers visitors the opportunity to explore stunning frescoes and artwork dating to the year 1000. Highlights include Zaborovsky Gate, the Brotherhood Building, Refectory Church and House of the Metropolitan. In keeping with the religious theme, there are two further places of worship worth exploring. St. Andrew’s Church and St. Michaels Monastery. St. Andrew’s is a beautiful Baroque church instantly recognisable by its teal green and gold gilded domes. The church overlooks the historic neighbourhood of Podil and is one of the four landmarks of cultural heritage. Visitors travelling with children and animal lovers will enjoy a trip to Kiev Zoo. Around 2,600 animals comprising over 300 species, with rare breeds such as Amur Tigers, Przewalski’s Horses and Bisons can be seen within the zoological park. Shevchenkivs’kyi District has a variety of dining venues serving Ukrainian and International cuisine and plenty of shops for visitors seeking local crafts and bargains.
Shevchenkivs’kyi District is widespread, although it is possible to navigate the area on foot. Many of the main attractions can be reached in less than one hour from each other on foot. There are two types of buses operating throughout the city, the public bus and trolleybus. These have assigned stops and operate to all the landmarks of Shevchenkivs’kyi District, while the city metro system operates from early morning until late. Several taxi services can be used in Kiev, such as Uklon, Uber.
Shevchenkivs’kyi District was originally established in 1937. In 2001 the regional area was increased to incorporate further districts. The district is abundant with history. The main churches, cathedrals and gates of Kiev all reside here majestic in their splendour. Visitors will enjoy walking around the characterful streets experiencing bustling squares, striking architecture and soaking up the Kiev atmosphere.
