Where to stay in Stamford

About Stamford

Once known as “Rippowam” to indigenous Native Americans, Stamford is one of the oldest communities on the East Coast, dating back to 1640. It boasts deep historical roots and is home to cultural and performing arts venues, beaches and international restaurants.

Things to do

A portion of Long Island Sound borders Stamford, offering sandy beaches and a historic lighthouse, as well as fishing, boating and sailing. However, most visitors flock to smaller parks, including Cove Island Park with its own beach, bird habitat, wetlands and trails. At Cummings Park, you’ll have access to a beach, boardwalk and fishing pier.

Travelling with the family? The kids will love visiting the educational farm and animals at Stamford Museum & Nature Center. There’s also an otter pond and on-site observatory. Housed in a 1929 mansion, the museum holds exhibits on nature, culture, art and agricultural sciences.

Catch a performing arts production at the Palace Theatre or see the Stamford Symphony or the Connecticut Ballet. You can also enjoy independent film, classics and cult favourites at the restored 1939 Avon Theatre Film Center.

Dining in Stamford is an international affair, with Peruvian food at Acuario Restaurant, Italian tapas at Bar Rosso and contemporary French bistro fare at Chez Vous. For after-dinner fun, dance to live Irish music at Tiernan’s, and sample sake libations in the lounge at Kashi Japanese.

Getting around

Taxis, buses and car-sharing pickups are available throughout town, while a trolley runs between downtown Stamford and Harbor Point. You can rent a car at major hotels, the Stamford Transportation Center and at Westchester County Airport, about a 20-minute drive from Stamford.
