About Szeged

Tree-lined squares, sidewalk cafes and beautiful historic architecture make Szeged one of the most agreeable cities in Hungary. It’s set on the banks of the Tisza River and combines historic charm with a contemporary feel. Admire centuries-old palaces in the pedestrianised Old Town and soak in one of Hungary’s most beautiful bath complexes. A year-round student population gives Szeged a youthful feel.

Szeged’s atmospheric Old Town will charm you with its magnificent buildings and monuments on every corner. Dóm Ter square is lined with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture, including twin-spired Votive Church. Reök Palace is another historic gem, built in the early 1900s in the Art Nouveau style. Check out the art exhibitions inside and enjoy lunch at the stylish café.

The Anna Baths complex occupies a magnificent Neo-Renaissance building. Inspired by traditional Turkish bathhouses, the interior is decorated with colourful tiles. Inside you can soak in thermal pools and relax in steam-filled saunas. Fill up your water bottle from the spring-fed fountain in front of the baths.

Szeged is famous as the birthplace of paprika, a Hungarian spice made from dried capsicums. The excellent Pick Salami & Szeged Paprika Museum introduces you to the iconic spice, which is known as “red gold” by locals. You’ll also get to sample the legendary Pick Salami made in Hungary.
