About Tampico

Tampico is a history-soaked city where you can admire some of the most beautiful 19th and 20th century architecture in Mexico. It’s set on the Panuco River and combines a charming downtown core with excellent shopping, dining and entertainment. Head to the coast to sunbathe on golden sand beaches and cool off in the Gulf of Mexico.

Things to do in Tampico

Stroll around Downtown Tampico and admire beautifully restored historic buildings. French-style buildings with beautiful wrought iron balconies frame Freedom Square. Tampico Cathedral soars over the palm-lined Plaza de Armas and features a magnificent Neoclassical façade.

Spend the day on Miramar Beach, a 10-kilometre-long stretch of sand on the Gulf of Mexico. Bask in the sunshine, swim in the Atlantic Ocean and snap a photo with the colourful Miramar sign. At the southern end of the beach is a rocky pier with fantastic views across the gulf.

Fed by the Panuco River, Carpintero Lagoon is a lush oasis in the heart of the city. Climb aboard a boat and enjoy a scenic cruise around the lagoon. Look for waterbirds wading in the shallows and crocodiles basking on the muddy banks.

Shop, dine and play at Altama City Centre, one of the biggest malls in the state of Tamaulipas. Browse a huge range of fashion boutiques, including luxury brands like Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger. Dine in the light-filled food court and catch the latest new release films at the multiscreen cinema.

From high-end restaurants to casual “fonda” eateries, you’ll see “carne a la tampiqueña” on menus across the city. The famous dish was invented in Tampico in the 1930s and features strips of beef served with enchiladas, guacamole, rice, beans and cheese.

Getting around Tampico

Parts of Tampico, including the historic downtown core, are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to cover longer distances. General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
