About Toyohashi

The city of Toyohashi offers a diverse array of attractions ranging from vibrant festivals and cultural events to historic buildings, museums and beautiful parks. While much of the city’s attraction are close by to the City Hall, known locally as Shiyakushomae, the city’s numerous parks and gardens are never too far away for those looking to escape the metropolitan vibe of the city. Toyohashi is also within reasonable travelling distance to many of Japan’s finest beaches on the Pacific Coast, making it an ideal base for surfers and swimmers.

There are numerous historical buildings and heritage sites for those curious about Japanese history including Yoshida Castle, a stunning Japanese castle originally built in 1505 in Toyohashi Park. Also, the Toyohashi City Museum of Art and History is home to numerous historical artefacts, painting and archaeological exhibits. There are many excellent festivals and cultural events each year in the region including the Toyohashi Festival and the Iris Flower Festival. The city is also close by to Cape Irago, recognised as one of the best surfing spots in the entire country.

The nearest airport to the city is Chubu Centrair International Airport for travellers flying in, with a further 70-minute train journey required to reach Toyohashi. The city is also connected to various train lines including a route to Tokyo which takes around 90 minutes as well as Kyoto and Osaka. Toyohashi is the home of one of the last remaining streetcar systems in Japan for those needing to get around the city.

The site of the modern day Toyohashi is believed to have been inhabited for thousands of years and has been an important part of Japanese history over the centuries. Toyohashi is home to Mikawa Port, one of Japan’s key seaports dedicated primarily to exporting and importing automobiles.
