About Tulln

One of the oldest towns in Austria, Tulln an der Donau lies on the south bank of the Danube River. It is believed to be of Celtic origin and rose to prominence as the Roman fort of “Comagena”. During the 10th century, Tulln served as a residence for the House of Babenberg before its relocation to Vienna.

Things to do in Tulln

History buffs can visit Tulln Roman Museum, which showcases findings from the ancient settlement of “Comagena”. Learn about its role as an equestrian fort and life for soldiers during the Marcomannic Wars, with tin figure dioramas helping to bring the past to life. In addition to centuries-old ceramics, glassware and jewellery, a large hoard of antique coins is on display.

On the riverbank is the Monument to the Nibelungs, which depicts the Tulln meeting of the Queen of Burgundy and the King of the Huns. Cast in bronze by Michail Nogin, it forms part of a large-scale fountain that features water spouting from an open book. Adjacent to the monument is a children’s playground and the leafy walking trails of the Donaulände Tulln.

Nestled behind the park is the Egon Schiele Museum, which documents the life and work of the locally born Expressionist painter. It occupies an 1898-built jail where Egon Schiele was imprisoned in 1912. Within its 12 rooms, you can learn about Schiele’s childhood in Tulln an der Donau and his experiences in Vienna while admiring the 90+ paintings on display.
