About University of Johannesburg

With over 50,000 students, the modern University of Johannesburg is one of the largest in South Africa. Former by merging three universities in 2005, it has four campuses spread across northern and western Johannesburg. Among the impressive cast of alumni are numerous sporting stars, like multiple Tour de France winner Chris Froome and Francois Pienaar, captain of South Africa's victorious 1995 World Cup rugby team.

The university's two main campuses are in the Johannesburg suburb of Auckland Park, close to Melville and Rossmore. Kingsway Campus is the largest and was formerly part of Rand Afrikaans University. Bunting Road is home to the technical part of the university and evolved out of Technikon Witwatersrand, an institute that was skilling up workers during the gold rush in the early part of the 20th century. The smaller Doornfontein and Soweto campuses are to the west of Johannesburg. All these campuses have large residences for students.

Like most places in Johannesburg, the University’s four campuses are on multiple minivan taxi routes. These operate very regularly throughout the day with a limited number of services running after dark.

By integrating different institutions, the University of Johannesburg has evolved into a representation of modern South Africa. Speakers of all the country's 11 languages are enrolled in the university, and there's a vibrant multiculturalism across all of the campuses.
