One of the largest urban rainforests in the world, Tijuca National Park sprawls across the mountainous Tijuca Massif to the west of Rio de Janeiro. It’s famed for the statue of Christ the Redeemer that rises atop Corcovado mountain, in addition to its scenic hiking trails and incredible biodiversity.
Jump aboard the train that winds its way to the top of Corcovado Mountain to photograph Christ the Redeemer and soak up the sweeping views of Rio de Janeiro. A walking trail also leads to the summit from Parque Lage, offering up-close encounters with colourful butterflies, howler monkeys and Tijuca’s tropical birdlife.
Looking for a shorter walk? Take the easy trail to the Cachoeira do Horto Waterfall or visit the picturesque Cascatinha Waterfall. Don’t miss seeing the Vista Chinesa, an oriental-style gazebo with stunning views across the rainforest and beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
Getting there
Tijuca National Park is around 45 minutes’ drive from the centre of Rio de Janeiro, with rental cars or scooters available. Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport is a 45-minute drive away.
