Positioned on Adelaide’s main cultural strip, the Art Gallery of South Australia boasts one of the largest art collections in Australia. It’s renowned for its Indigenous and colonial Australian artworks, European landscape paintings and sculptures by Rodin and Henry Moore.
Admire the Heidelberg School paintings on display, including Arthur Streeton’s “Road to Templestowe”, then browse the works by mid-20th-century painters Russell Drysdale, Margaret Preston and Sidney Nolan. There’s also a notable collection of works by South Australian artists, such as Hans Heysen and Jeffrey Smart, as well as the “father of landscape painting”, John Glover.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Art Gallery of South Australia hosts temporary and touring exhibitions in its basement gallery, many of which include large-scale installations. There’s an on-site Gallery Store where you can pick up art-themed books and giftware, as well as the Art Gallery Food + Wine restaurant that’s open for breakfast and lunch.
Getting there
The Art Gallery of South Australia is located on the northern edge of Adelaide’s CBD, with trams and buses stopping outside the entrance. The gallery is a 10-minute walk from Adelaide Railway Station and 20 minutes’ drive from Adelaide Airport.
