About Asheville

Nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Asheville thrives on eclectic art, historical architecture and the great outdoors. Part of the Appalachian Trail runs near the city and the region hosts a plethora of local craft breweries.

Things to do in Asheville

One of the most striking estates in Asheville is the 19th-century French Renaissance-style Biltmore estate, which is open to the public for viewing masterpiece artworks from famous artists like Renoir. You can roam through the 250 grand rooms with 65 fireplaces and can tour the estate gardens and walking trails.

To get an overview of the city’s history, take a self-guided walk on the Asheville Urban Trail, which curves past 30 architectural structures, sculptures and monuments. Walk or cycle the Appalachian Ale Trail to sample dozens of local beers at tasting rooms, such as Asheville Brewing Company and Greenmansion, home to Green Man Brewing.

The River Arts District borders French Broad River, encompassing at least 20 historic buildings in the downtown area. The former tannery, cotton mill and industrial structures now overflow with artsy museums, galleries and casual cafes. You can visit working artists creating everything from ceramics to paintings, photography, textile arts and jewellery.

A stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the nearby town of Hot Springs, where you can hike a short loop before exploring Pisgah National Park with its winding trails, cascading waterfalls and abundant fishing spots. Prefer to drive through nature? Take the Blue Ridge Parkway through picturesque mountains towns, stopping at the Folk Art Center to see work by Southern Appalachian artisans.
