About Chiavenna

Chiavenna is a picturesque mountain town framed by soaring snow-capped peaks. From history and culture to unique culinary traditions, Chiavenna offers an authentic taste of Italy. Explore the charming historic centre, admire beautiful palazzi and bite into cheese aged in subterranean caves.

Things to do in Chiavenna

Stroll around the pedestrianised historic centre and explore a maze of cobblestone alleys and sun-drenched plazas. It’s amazingly photogenic, with beautiful churches and palaces framing the main streets. Stop to admire the postcard-perfect mountain views as you cross the bridge spanning across the Mera River.

Stroll around Parco Archeologico Botanico del Paradiso and enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. The park is set on the site of an ancient fortress and reimagined as a flower-filled botanical garden. Some sections are formal and beautifully landscaped, and others are wild and overgrown.

Follow the trail from the town centre to Parco delle Marmitte dei Giganti. The park is named after the enormous, bowl-shaped holes carved into the rocks by glacier runoff. Look closely to spot the ancient petroglyphs that decorate some of the boulders, caves and rock walls.

Visit Palazzo Vertemate Franchi, a magnificent Renaissance villa just outside Chiavenna. Inside you can admire some of the best-preserved frescoes in Italy. They’re inspired by verses written by the famous roman poet, Ovid. Keep an eye out for Niccolo, the palace’s resident ghost.

Chiavenna is dotted with cosy restaurants and trattorias, many with their own “crotti” caves. They’re used to age cheese, cure meat and store wine. Enjoy local favourites like “bresaola” air-dried beef and “gnocchetti chiavennaschi” potato dumplings smothered with cheese. Wash down your meal with a glass of red from the neighbouring Valtellina winemaking region.
