Nestled at the junction of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing is encircled by dense forests, inviting water reserves and rugged mountains that have bestowed it the nickname “Mountain City”. However, step inside this mega metropolis and stand beneath steel mountains that conceal upscale waterfront restaurants, centuries-old temples and enduring Chinese traditions.
Things to do in Chongqing
Chongqing’s history dates back to the mythical people of Ba, with a recent history that is just as fascinating. Visit the Liberation Monument, a clock tower in the heart of the city that commemorates China’s victory over Japan in World War II. Afterwards, learn about the settlement, war and folk customs of Chongqing at the Three Gorges Museum, which also has paintings, sculptures and antique items.
This is definitely a 21st-century city, home to superior shopping opportunities within the Jiefangbei district. Shopping malls and exclusive boutiques sit alongside international and local restaurants. Don’t forget to browse the handicrafts and discount garments at Chaotianmen Market. Head across the Yangzi River to Nan’an, a popular nightlife district with late-night bars overlooking the river.
You can still experience old Chongqing with a stroll through Ciqikou, an ancient village with teashops, craft stores, street vendors and historic architecture. Looking for peace among nature? Make a beeline for Eling Park, where you can see hundreds of native plants and capture panoramic city views from the lookout tower.
You won’t regret making the drive out to Fengdu County about two hours away, where you’ll find the truly unique Snowy Jade Cave. It’s the only pure-white jade-esque cave in China, spread over three dramatic levels.
Getting around Chongqing
Chongqing features three major railway stations, which provide a reliable intercity railway and CRT metro system throughout the city’s districts. Buses are also available, but service less of the city. Ferries along the rivers are used mainly for tours, but some still provide public transport.
