About Detmold

Detmold is a gateway to the North Rhine-Westphalia region, home to family-friendly attractions and a historic castle. Admire medieval buildings in the historic centre and visit one of the largest and most authentic open-air museums in Germany.

Things to do

Strolling around the atmospheric streets of the Old Town is one of the best ways to enjoy Detmold. Admire the beautifully restored half-timbered houses, including Lippisches Landesmuseum, which has been reimagined as a local history museum showcasing folk costumes, antiques and Roman artefacts.

Fürstliches Residenzschloss, also known as the Princely Residence Castle, is set in the heart of the city. It’s built in the lavish Weser Renaissance style and features an impressive main tower. Guided tours take you behind the scenes of the castle and showcase elaborate rooms like the Red Salon and Ancestral Hall.

The Hermann Monument is a short drive from the city centre and commands an imposing hilltop position. The larger-than-life statue towers 53 metres high and pays tribute to Arminius, the legendary Cheruscian chieftain who led the Germanic army to victory in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.

Step back in time and experience traditional Westphalian culture at the LWL Open-Air Museum, one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Explore the family-friendly attraction on foot or hitch a ride on a horse-drawn wagon. The museum is dotted with more than 100 original buildings, including farmhouses, barns and workshops. A group of beautiful Senner horses add to the rural atmosphere. Adlerwarte Berlebeck is another popular day trip and gets you up close with more than 40 species of birds. Don’t miss the birds-of-prey demonstrations starring eagles, falcons, vultures and other raptors.

Getting around

Detmold is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, particularly in the historic centre. Trains connect Detmold with nearby towns like Herford, Bielefeld, Altenbeken and Paderborn. Hanover Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
