About Forest of Bowland

Despite the name, the Forest of Bowland doesn’t have that many trees. This spectacular area of sharp valleys and open moorland stretches out across the north-west of England, with parts of it in Lancashire and Yorkshire. It’s a haven for walkers and one of the oldest landscapes in the country. Dotted across the Forest of Bowland are a number of tiny villages, home to traditional farmhouses and the odd local pub.

Exploring this area evokes what England used to look like a few thousand years ago. There was once an unbroken wilderness stretching from here to Sherwood Forest, but these valleys are one of few places to be left wild, as foxes and grouse continue to roam freely. The flat summit of Pendle Hill rises to one side, while a horseshoe of peaks on the western boundary provides countless options for hikers. Very close to the Whitendale Hanging Stones, visitors can stand at the geographic centre of Britain, or find exceptional views at Ward’s Stone towards the Ribble Valley and Lake District.

The Bowland Visitor Centre can be found in Beacon Fell Country Park, in the south of the Forest of Bowland. There is also a specific visitors centre for the Pendle area, situated in Colne. Most of the area is protected, and there are only a handful of local roads across the Forest of Bowland. Almost everyone is hiking between destinations, setting off from villages like Slaidburn and Bolton by Bowland. To reach the Forest of Bowland by public transport, the easiest places to start are Lancaster to the west and Clitheroe to the south.

The landscapes of the Forest of Bowland are better understood through their modern colloquial name, Bowland Fells. “Forest” had a different meaning when the area was named in the latter part of the first millennium AD, meaning a “royal hunting ground”.
