About Guanshan

Surrounded by mountains and forests, Guanshan Township feels worlds away from buzzing Taitung City. Admire historic architecture, enjoy traditional Taiwanese food and explore one of the country’s most scenic cycle trails.

Things to do

Decorated with colourful wood carvings and cherry-red lanterns, Guanshan Tianhou Temple is dedicated to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. In the main hall is an impressive statue of the beloved Chinese goddess. After dark, the temple is lit up with colourful lights.

Guanshan Township Loop Bike Lane stretches along the banks of Guanshan Canal. Bike rentals are a great way to explore the 12-kilometre-long path, which takes you past emerald-green fields and rice paddies dotted with grazing water buffalo. In the distance, you’ll see the towering Central Mountain Range. Riding through the postcard-perfect Aisle of Betel Nut Palms is a highlight.

Guanshan Water Park is a great halfway point when cycling the Guanshan Township Loop Bike Lane. Cool off in the fountains, enjoy a picnic on the grass and take a spin on a swan-shaped pedal boat. Guided tours are a great way to find out more about local birds living at the park.

In the city centre, Guanshan Old Railway Station recalls the grandeur of a bygone era. It was built in 1919 and blends Taiwanese, Japanese and Western architectural styles. Features include the elegant, curved roof and handsome wood window frames. In addition to beautiful historic architecture, the neighbourhood is famous for friendly street cats.

The town centre you’ll find plenty of restaurants serving tasty Taiwanese food. Traditional “lunch boxes” are popular and feature locally harvested rice topped with fried vegetables, meat and a soy-braised egg.
