Sprawling across mountainous terrain to the south-east of Hsinchu City, Wufeng is a predominantly indigenous township in Taiwan’s north. It’s home to the Atayal and Saisiyat people who maintain many of their ancient traditions, as well as the former residence of influential Chinese politician, Zhang Xuelian. On the southern edge of Wufeng Township lies the Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area, which is an outdoor lover’s paradise.
If you’re interested in the tumultuous history between China and Japan, don’t miss a visit to the Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park, which occupies the former home of the “Young Marshal”. Learn about the influential role Zhang Xuelian played in the 1936 Xi’an Incident and his fight against Japan, as well as his 50 years under house arrest in Taiwan. In addition to rare photographs, recorded interviews and personal documents, the museum offers scenic views of the Hsuehshan Mountains.
Further south sprawls the Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area, which encompasses more than 900 hectares of high-altitude forest, gushing waterfalls and seasonal cherry blossoms. See the 30-metre-high drop of the Guanwu Waterfall or hike the Hiyama Giant Woods Trail for sweeping views across the misty mountains.
One of the most unique events in Wufeng Township is the Pas-ta’ai, a ritual celebrated by the Saisiyat people every two years. Held in Ta’ai Village, it honours the Ta’ai tribe who used to live near the Sasiyat. The three-day event is dominated by ceremonial singing and dancing in ornately decorated costumes, many of which feature bells to help connect with the spirit world.
Wufeng Township is around 2.5 hours’ drive from New Taipei City and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. Regular buses connect to Hsinchu City and are the main means of getting around the area.
