Things to do

Stroll or drive around the centre of Innisfail to see its collection of historic architecture, from the early-20th-century Innisfail Courthouse on Edith Street to the post-war St Andrew's Presbyterian Memorial Church on Rankin Street. You’ll also be able to admire the Art Deco architecture of the old theatre, now part of the Australian Sugar Industry Museum. Inside, you’ll see interactive exhibits and informative displays on the town’s sugar heritage.

Want to spot a crocodile while you’re in Innisfail? You can try your luck gazing out at the Johnstone River from Fitzgerald Esplanade. However, you’ll have a better chance of seeing these highly-developed predators from a crocodile-spotting cruise with Snapping Tours. The boats take you up and down the river with experienced guides who know where the crocodiles like to hang out.

Excellent dining can be found along Fitzgerald Esplanade and Rankin Street, especially at Sapore Di Italia, which is renowned for its Italian-style pastries and coffee. If you’re looking for a cold beer, head to Imperial Tavern, which also serves hearty Australian fare.

Those seeking some outdoor fun should visit Warrina Lakes, where you can stroll kilometres of walkways through the 50-hectare recreational park. You can also visit the on-site Bushtucker Gardens to learn about traditional Aboriginal bush tucker, spot ducks and geese on the water, take a dip in the swimming pool and let the kids run wild on the playground.

Getting around

Innisfail is just over one hour’s drive south of Cairns and just over three hours north of Townsville. You can walk, drive or use buses and taxis to get around town, but it’s best to have your own vehicle to explore further afield.
