About Kateríni

Katerini is a sun-drenched city set between the Aegean Sea and the Olympus Range. The city is a launchpad to Mount Olympus, which looms over the plain and forms a dramatic backdrop. Due east is the Olympus Riviera, a 70-kilometre-long stretch of coast with sandy beaches and laid-back resorts.

Things to do in Kateríni

Cafes, bars and tavernas give Katerini a lively feel. The city is brimming with restaurants serving mouth-watering Mediterranean cuisine. Try local dishes like “youvarlakia” meatball soup and octopus simmered in white wine. The weekend market is a great place to stock up on local produce like kiwi fruit and hazelnuts.

Head east and beach-hop along the Olympus Riviera. Paralia Katerinis is one of the closest beaches and features a long stretch of gold sand lined with cafes, restaurants and bars. Gritsa Beach is quiet and uncrowded, with silver-pebble sand and a handful of fish taverns where you can enjoy lunch.

Mount Olympus towers over Katerini and is steeped in Greek mythology. At more than 2,900 metres, it’s the tallest and most impressive peak in the country. The trail to the summit is challenging and suitable for experienced hikers only. The easier trails on the lower slopes are ideal for beginner and intermediate hikers.

The Archaeological Park of Dion protects an ancient sanctuary built to honour Zeus, the Greek god of the sky. The ruins date back to the 5th century BC and include villas, public baths and a Roman theatre. The small on-site museum showcases statues and mosaics found at the site. The archaeological park doubles as a haven for local wildlife, including frogs and kingfishers.
