Leederville once formed part of a tribal land called Boorloo. The land encompassing Lake Monger was originally used as a campsite by the Aboriginal people. As the area was teeming with wildlife, it was the perfect area for hunting and fishing. In the 1800s, William Leeder and John Monger bought the land and began to build. The arrival of 10,000 convicts increased demand for food production. Wetlands and surrounding parks were utilised as market gardens, dairy and poultry farms. Today, Leederville’s heritage lives on through its cafes, organic produce markets, delicatessens and its picturesque wetlands.
