About Llangollen

Perched on the banks of River Dee, the small town of Llangollen features engaging museums and inviting microbreweries. It’s also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site canal system and centuries-old abbey, castle, mill and pubs.

Things to do

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, built in 1805, carries canal boats for trips from Llangollen wharf up the Vale of Llangollen. Known as the “stream in the sky,” the intricate canal system offers spectacular views as well as tranquil picnic spots along the riverbanks.

Towering in the background of Llangollen, Castell Dinas Bran sits on a hilltop and serves as a popular walking trek from town. Hike three kilometres to the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, a Gothic-style Cistercian abbey, which showcases the lives of past monks and puts on plays, concerts and special events.

To see how the British upper class lived in the 1800s, stroll through the house and gardens of Erddig. Visit Plas Newydd, former home of the Ladies of Llangollen, to view its carved-wood architectural features and elaborate stained-glass windows. At Llangollen Museum, you can see the gravestones of the Ladies of Llangollen along with memorabilia of the town over the centuries.

Corn Mill pub serves as one of the town’s favourite watering holes and dining spots. Have lunch on the deck, which is framed by the original water wheel turning in the converted mill. If you want to sample local brews, visit the McGivern microbrewery just outside of town.

Getting around

Buses and taxis provide transportation in Llangollen and the main part of town is pedestrian-friendly. You can also rent a car at Hawarden Airport, about 23 kilometres away.
