Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands and is the throbbing epicentre of archaic Cycladic culture. The city is comprised of mountainous villages, ruins and swathes of sandy beachfront, but is also renowned for its old churches, monasteries and Venetian castles.

Things to do

Stroll through Old Town for an authentic taste of Naxos culture. Meander along cobblestone walkways, tour the remnants of a medieval castle and spend some time in the Old Town Market, where you can taste Naxos wine and Ladotyri cheese and Kitro, a local citron liqueur.

For a day in the sun, visit Naxos Agios Prokopios Beach, just five kilometres outside the capital. Take a dip in the crystalline waters, rent a sunbed or an umbrella and relax with your toes in the sand. Stop for a drink or a snack at the village of Agios Prokopios situated directly behind the sand dunes.

Go on a self-guided tour through Kastro, the Castle of Naxos Town, home to the Tower of Glezos. Explore the Archaeological Museum of Sifnos to view findings from the excavated sites and journey through the Venetian Museum to learn about living life Venetian-style.

Visit the Temple of Apollo, Naxos’ most-famous landmark. Admire the rectangular door standing eight metres high and see some of the remains of the temple floor. Its location against the ocean makes for a stunning photograph at sunset.

Getting around

Buses are one of the easiest ways of getting around, with services from Chora to several villages and beaches. You can also rent a car or a motorbike or hail a taxi.
