About Palmar Norte

Located on the north bank of the Terrara River, Palmar Norte is an important agricultural hub in the Osa region of Costa Rica. It’s a major banana-growing town and is framed by densely forested mountains that provide a habitat for native primates and birds. Surrounding Palmar Norte are several UNESCO-listed archaeological sites famed for their pre-Columbian stone spheres.

Things to do in Palmar Norte

On the western outskirts of Palmar Norte is the Sitio Arqueologico Batambal, which preserves the site of an ancient settlement dating back to around 300 AD. Ceramic objects, belted axes and stone deposits have been discovered here, with the site believed to have been used for ceremonial purposes. Don’t miss the stone spheres, with their purpose remaining unknown.

On the other side of Palmar Norte is El Silencio, another archaeological site where stone spheres have been discovered. In fact, it preserves Costa Rica’s largest pre-Columbian stone sphere, which weighs around 24,000 kilograms. Together with Finca 6 and Grijalba 2, El Silencio and Batambal have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
