About Salida

Translating from Spanish as “exit”, Salida is named after its location where the Arkansas River flows out of the Upper Arkansas Valley before entering Bighorn Sheep Canyon. It is backed by the 3,570-metre-high peak of Methodist Mountain, which lies at the northernmost point of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.

Things to do in Salida

More than 100 of Salida’s turn-of-the-century buildings are protected within the Salida Downtown Historic District, which was added to the National Historic Register in 1984. Antique stores, cafes and restaurants now occupy many of the buildings, together with art galleries and studios. Don’t miss the 1886-built caboose that stands on the site of Salida’s original train depot.

Natural hot spring water is pumped directly into the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, which was originally established in the 1930s as a part of a project employing men during the Great Depression. In addition to swimming in the 25-metre Lap Pool, you can enjoy a splash around in the Leisure Pool. Water yoga and fitness classes are also available.

Salida serves as a gateway to the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, which is a popular destination for whitewater rafting and kayaking. Join one of the local outfitters to tackle its Class II to V rapids or explore the area along the network of hiking and mountain biking trails. Float fishing trips are also available for luring brown and rainbow trout.
