The area of San Sebastián de los Reyes was founded in 1492. The Catholic Monarchs at the time tried to encourage settlement in the outer lying areas of Madrid and allowed development of a town next to the chapel dedicated to San Sebastien. During the Spanish War of Independence, the town became home to French troops. Today, it is a popular residential area due to its easy access into central Madrid and proximity to the natural parks and beauty of the Spanish countryside.
