About Szentendre

Picture-perfect Szentendre is one of the prettiest towns in Hungary. It’s set on the banks of the Danube River and will charm you with its beautiful Baroque architecture and centuries-old churches. Explore winding cobbled streets, admire brightly-painted houses and peek into the museums, galleries and boutiques clustered around the main square.

Things to do in Szentendre

Blagovestenska Church soars over the main square and is full of surprises. Behind the simple façade is an elaborate interior inspired by Baroque and Rococo design. The Greek Orthodox church dates to the 18th century and is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town.

Fo tér, the town’s bustling main square, is framed by handsome historic buildings. Pedestrianised lanes branch off the square and are lined with cafes and gift shops. Stock up on unique souvenirs, including hand-painted pottery, embroidered folk costumes, colourful dolls and artisan marzipan.

Szentendre was once a thriving art colony and hasn’t lost sight of its creative streak. Independent galleries and studios dot the town centre and are great places to shop for souvenirs. You can also visit museums dedicated to local artists, such as Ferenczy Károly Museum, which is one of the best and showcases impressionist works by the iconic Hungarian painter.

The Art Mill occupies three floors of a 19th-century sawmill and is one of the most exciting contemporary galleries in Hungary. Inside you can discover photographs, sculptures, paintings and interactive installations by artists from around the world.

Learn about local history and culture at the Hungarian Open-Air Ethnographical Museum. The interactive museum is dotted with historic buildings, including churches, mills and farmhouses. Try your hand at local crafts in artisan-led workshops and enjoy traditional baked goods at the bakery.
