History abounds in Tata, where you’ll find beautiful Baroque architecture and a magnificent Renaissance castle. Sightsee in the city centre, relax by the lake and explore hiking trails in the surrounding mountains. Things to do in Tata

Tata is set on the shores of Lake Oreg, one of the oldest artificial lakes in Hungary. Scenic walking and cycling trails loop around the lake, which is often filled with thousands of wild geese. In summer, the city comes alive with festivals, markets and outdoor concerts.

Tata Castle dates to the 1300s and is a Hungarian jewel. It’s set on the banks of Lake Oreg and features a dramatic Renaissance façade. Within the fortress you’ll find several cultural attractions, including Kuny Domokos Museum filled with art and antiques.

The Gerecse Mountains tower over Tata and immerse you in the Hungarian countryside. Trails wind through the oak forests and take you past flower-filled meadows and along rocky ridges. Summit trails are a challenge but reward you with fantastic views. There’s a good chance to spot red deer grazing in the forest, including bucks with enormous antlers.

Hungary has a thriving “kave” coffee culture, and you’ll find plenty of places to enjoy a caffeine fix in Tata. Traditionally, coffee is served black and accompanied by traditional cakes and cookies. If you’re feeling indulgent, order a “becsi kave” topped with whipped cream. At local restaurants, you can try special Hungarian dishes like “meggyleves” sour cherry soup topped with sour cream and hearty “porkolt” meat stew.

Getting around Tata

Tata is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while bicycles are a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the city and the lake. Trains run between Tata and Budapest in around one hour. Budapest Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
