About Trentham Racecourse

Dedicated to preserving the region’s rail history, the Silver Stream Railway operates vintage locomotives along a section of the old Hutt Valley Line. It owns an assortment of partially-restored and functioning rolling stock, with train rides held along the Heritage-listed railway twice a month.

Learn about the establishment of the Silver Stream Railway back in 1967 and the laying of tracks along the Hutt Valley Line old formation a decade later. The 1.5-kilometre-long track was officially opened to the public in 1986, with vintage steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and railcars now plying the route.

Enjoy the 15-minute return journey along the Silver Stream Railway as many times as you want on the day of your visit. There are picnic facilities at the station where you can relax over lunch and a shop selling drinks, ice cream and railway-themed souvenirs.

Getting there

The Silver Stream Railway is located between Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, with buses stopping a short walk from the railway. Wellington is a 25-minute drive away, while Wellington International Airport is around 40 minutes away.
