About Al Balad

Al-Balad is the historic centre of the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and one of the most important cultural areas in the state. The ancient city is decorated with architectural beauty and historic vibes that attribute to its thriving tourist population. It is listed as a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its concentration of remarkably preserved attractions.

Al-Balad’s reigning landmarks include the impressive gates of Medina and Makkah and the Al-Naseef House which is an architectural masterpiece that now serves as a public museum. The Jeddah Municipality Museum is another popular tourist attraction and the Al Shafei Mosque one of the most well-preserved cultural buildings in the area. Popular tourist activities include exploring the unique markets, souvenir shopping, and visiting any of the Shisha Cafes or Hookah Cafes that preside throughout much of the area.

Taxis and cars are the predominant forms of transportation around the city of Jeddah although some minivans route between points of interest. Walking is the most popular and convenient way of exploring the historic district of Al-Balad.

The history of the ancient city centre dates back to the 7th century although a population shift away from the area occurred with the destruction of the surrounding city walls. In the early 2000s efforts at preservation resulted in its final enlistment as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2014.
