About Carboneras

Carboneras is a sun-drenched coastal town set between the Andalucian desert and the Alboran Sea. The white-sand beaches fringed by grass-covered dunes and rugged cliffs resemble moonscapes. Relax on the beach, hike in a protected nature reserve and discover one of the top dive sites in Spain.

Things to do in Carboneras

Carboneras is set within the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve, which protects a unique arid coastal landscape. At 220 metres above sea level, Mesa Roldán is one of the best viewpoints in the park. From the volcanic plateau, you can enjoy sweeping views over the coast and the surrounding mountains. The plateau was once submerged underwater and supported a thriving coral reef. Look closely and you’ll see the remnants of seashells and fossils embedded in the rocks.

Dive trips to Isla de San Andrés immerse you in the thriving underwater ecosystem. The volcanic islet boasts incredible biodiversity and is carpeted with emerald-green Posidonia meadows. Experienced divers can explore caves, craters and rock walls.

From long stretches of sand to hidden coves, there are beaches for every occasion in Carboneras. There are several beaches within walking distance of the city centre, including Playa de Los Cocones and Playa de Carboneras. Head up or down the coast to find uncrowded stretches of sand. Accessible only on foot, Playa de Los Muertos features white sand, turquoise water and rugged rock formations.

Castillo de San Andrés was built in the 1500s to defend the Andalucian coast from pirate raids. Up close, you’ll be impressed by the soaring stone walls and cylindrical towers. The stronghold overlooks Plaza Castillo and moonlights as a venue for art exhibitions and music concerts.
