About Draguignan

Nicknamed the “Capital of Artillery”, Draguignan is a historically rich town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France. According to legend, it takes its name from the Latin word for “dragon” in reference to the story of Saint Hermentaire killing a dragon to save the local population.

Dominating the old town of Draguignan is the Tour de l’Horloge, a square-shaped tower that dates back to the 17th century. It comprises three floors with turrets at the top and a wrought iron campanile that rises 24 metres in height. Soak up the sweeping views across Draguignan from the top of the tower or coincide your visit with one of the summer shows in the Theatre of Greenery at its base.

Discover the artisan traditions that have shaped Provence at the Musee des Arts et Traditions Populaires, which is located in the heart of Draguignan. Learn about olive cultivation, winemaking and cork production while admiring some of the antique tools and artefacts used in each trade. The museum also exhibits traditional costumes, ceramics and objects that are featured in local festivals.

Another museum not to miss is the Musee de l’Artillerie, which is based at Draguignan’s military academy. It showcases around 600 years of French artillery history, with centuries-old weapons, uniforms and medals on display. Get up close to an 18th-century cannon and a gun carriage designed by Lieutenant General Gribeauval, as well as models of battles that were significant in the evolution of artillery.
