Where to stay in Salford

About Salford

The ancient city of Salford has one of England’s highest densities of heritage buildings and celebrates a history that dates back to Neolithic times. Located a couple of kilometres west of Manchester City Centre, it’s a thriving city that has a distinctive personality. Salford is an integral part of Greater Manchester and has been a city since 1926, thanks mainly to its thriving textile industry.

Salford has always stayed true to its working class roots, and many of the streets are lined with uniformed terraced buildings. The present day city is a vibrant meeting place of cultures and people, especially the area around Salford Quays. Visitors enjoy a warm welcome here, whether they’re exploring the restaurants and pubs or visiting some of the heritage buildings. The most impressive sights are the old churches, including St Augustine, St Mary the Virgin, and St Mark’s. Salford Cathedral is another famous icon.

Salford incorporates a number of smaller villages within its urban boundaries, and many of these have their own railway station. Eccles and Patricroft are on the railway linking Manchester and Liverpool, while Swinton, Pendleton, and Clifton offer trains to destinations across North-west England. It’s easy to reach Salford City Centre from Manchester on train or tram services to Salford Central and Salford Crescent.

Three monuments provide an overview of Salford’s history. An Iron Age promontory fort takes visitors back in time, while Hanging Bridge dates to the 14th century, and an underground canal in Swinton is considered one of the engineering feats of 18th century England.
