About Shivaji Park

As Mumbai’s largest public space, Shivaji Park is an oasis of green in the heart of the city. Not only is it a haven for locals and sports lovers, but it’s also considered a historical and cultural gem. Over the years it’s played host to a string of political and social gatherings, including the freedom fighter protests that led the Indian independence movement.

For cricket fans, a stroll around Shivaji Park is a must. Not only do locals love to bowl a few innings on the grass, but it’s also a popular training ground for professional teams. It’s home to eight cricket clubs that have produced a handful of star players.

The main entrance is located on the east side of the park and offers pedestrian-only access. It’s just a stone’s throw from Mahim Bay and bordered by the prestigious Shivaji Park Residential Zone, which houses some of Mumbai’s most sought-after real estate. From Colaba, the drive to Shivaji Park takes around 45 minutes.

Founded in 1925, Shivaji Park was created during the British Rule. While it was originally called Mahim Park, it was later renamed to honour the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji. Today, the towering Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue stands as a tribute to the beloved 17th century warrior, the king who led many battles against the Mughal Empire.
