About Tomakomai

The city of Tomakomai in the north of Japan is known for its rugged industrial landscape and its key strategic location as a port for many long-distance ferry services to other areas of Japan. As well as its many shops and restaurants, Tomakomai is also ideally situated near to Mount Tarumae which has made it a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts.

Tomakomai is a city that offers a diverse array of things to see and do whether visitors are exploring the inner city or experiencing some of the beautiful natural landscapes in the surrounding area. Shikotsu-Toya National Park is one of the main attractions in the region with an area of 993 square kilometres. The national park is known for its hot springs and volcanic caldera lakes and offers spectacular views of the picturesque volcanic landscape. Mount Tarumae within the national park is one of the most popular places for both locals and visitors, known best for its excellent hiking opportunities.

Tomakomai has a train station which is linked to numerous destinations in the region including Sapporo, although the city is known primarily for its extensive ferry networks. The nearest airport to the city is New Chitose Airport, the largest airport in Hokkaido and the fifth-largest in Japan. New Chitose Airport is less than 20 kilometres from the centre of Tomakomai and can easily be reached by taxi or private transfer.

The city of Tomakomai was originally a small village before being granted city status in 1948. It is known primarily for its busy port which provides both passenger and freighter operations. The total population of the city is 174,216 which makes it the fifth largest city in the province of Hokkaido.
