Where to stay in Weizhou Island

About Weizhou Island

Blanketed in lush forest, Weizhou is the largest and youngest volcanic island in the South China Sea. It’s home to spectacular coastal landscapes and rock formations eroded over thousands of years, together with Gothic churches built by French missionaries.

Things to do

Explore the Crocodile Crater Park, renowned for its uniquely-shaped volcanic rocks, white beaches and crystal-clear waters. Stroll along the wooden boardwalk that links the park’s caves, arches and picturesque bays, then visit the Crocodile Crater Park Museum where volcanic rocks and corals can be viewed up close.

Relax on the photogenic sands at Shiluokou, a long stretch of beach on the west coast of Weizhou Island. Rent a beach umbrella or get active with a range of water sports, then admire the naturally-eroded stone that appears like a woman longing for her husband’s return from the sea.

Experience an unforgettable sunrise at the Colorful Beach Scenic Area, which is also referred to as “Sesame Beach” due to the small black stones along its shores. Coincide your visit with the low tide when the sun reflects on the stones to create a dazzling natural effect, then feast on authentic local dishes in nearby food stalls.

Admire the Gothic-style architecture of Shengtang Village’s Catholic Cathedral, which was built in the mid-19th century by French missionaries using bamboo and sedimentary rocks sourced from the sea floor. Alternatively, visit the charming Saint Maria Church in Chengzi Village that opens its doors to the public for Sunday Mass.

Getting around

Regular boats depart from Beihai International Passenger Port for the three-hour journey to Weizhou Island. You can explore the island using bicycles, scooters or a motor tricycle.
