From its lively high street to its rich gold mining heritage, West Wyalong is an enchanting slice of the Riverina Region. The laid-back country town sits in rural New South Wales and is surrounded by silvery bushland, lush wetlands and freshwater lakes.

Gold was first discovered in 1893 and sparked a frenzy. For a glimpse at the town's gold mining narrative visit the Wyalong Museum. Housed in the Old Courthouse, it showcases a fascinating collection of vintage gold mining machinery.

One of the best ways to enjoy West Wyalong is to stroll along Main Street. It was originally built around the town's old tree stumps and gold mines, which earned it its "Crooked Mile" nickname. Whether you want to soothe aching muscles or slip into relaxation mode, the Barmedman Mineral Pool eases aches and pains. It was once a cavernous goldmine and is now fed by a mineral-rich underground stream.

The Green Corridor Walking Track spans between the townships of Wyalong and West Wyalong and is a great way to enjoy the fresh country air. The 4.5-kilometre-long boardwalk takes you past bushland reserves, Aboriginal art murals and wildlife-rich wetlands. Keep an eye out for pelicans and ibis.

Getting around

West Wyalong is easy to navigate on foot, but you'll need a car to explore the rest of the Riverina region. Wagga Wagga is the closest airport, with the drive to West Wyalong taking around 90 minutes. If you're road tripping from Sydney or Canberra, allow at least six hours.
