About Bang Khae

Translating as “County of the Hummingbird Tree”, Bang Khae is one of the 50 districts of Bangkok. It lies west of the city centre and is scattered with shopping malls and temples, while it’s also home to an organic farm that specialises in the cultivation of melons.

Things to do in Bang Khae

One of Bang Khae’s most notable temples is Wat Muang, a 19th-century masterpiece that features a highly ornamental roof. It overlooks a small canal and can easily be visited by ferry, with the temple buildings beautifully illuminated at night. Step inside the main pavilion to admire the gilded Buddha statues or join the locals in feeding the resident fish.

For a retail fix, head to the Mall Bangkae, which is home to a huge indoor waterfall and a pond filled with fish. In addition to well-stocked supermarkets and international chain retail stores, it features an indoor amusement park and a kids' play zone. When it’s time to eat, there are plenty of options to choose from, including fast food favourites and traditional Thai restaurants.

An education in organic farming awaits at the Meuan Jan Farm, which lies in the far north-west of Bang Khae. It is particularly renowned for its cultivation of melons, with a variety of melon dishes, sweets and smoothies dished up at the on-site cafe. The creative sculptures dotted around the farm make for great photo ops and organically grown produce is available for purchase.

Getting around Bang Khae

Bang Khae is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Bangkok and 1.5 hours from Suvarnabhumi Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe.
