About Florø

Encompassing the entire island of Florelandet, Florø was founded by royal decree in 1860 and is the westernmost town on the Scandinavian Peninsula. Its waterfront setting is celebrated at the engaging Coast Museum while scenic boat cruises access the famous church of Kinn and the historic Ytterøyane Lighthouse.

Things to do in Florø

Discover the industries that have impacted the Sogn og Fjordane region at the Coast Museum, which is spread across several buildings to the south of Florø’s town centre. Learn about the island’s establishment as a herring trading post around 150 years ago and the North Sea oil and gas fields that lie offshore, then admire the vintage boats and model fishing cottage on display.

Jump aboard a boat to visit the charming island of Kinn, which is home to a famous stone church that dates back to the 12th century. Hear about the island’s rich fishing heritage before hiking to the top of the Kinnaklova Hill, which offers panoramic views across the island and the waters of Frøysjøen.

After visiting Kinn, continue cruising west to see the red-and-white-striped Ytterøyane Lighthouse, which rises to 31 metres in height atop a remote island. Learn about its construction in 1881 to assist vessels navigating the tumultuous waters of the Norwegian Sea, with waves often seen battering its rocky base in the winter months.

Getting around Florø

Florø Airport is a five-minute drive from the town centre and has flights to destinations across Norway. Florø’s centre is compact enough to explore on foot but having your own vehicle is best for visiting the surrounding attractions. Boats are readily available for accessing the nearby islands.
