About Gudvangen

Located at the southern end of the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, Gudvangen is a historic Viking village in Norway’s Vestland county. Its name translates as “field of the gods by the water”, with the area’s spectacular scenery attracting visitors since the 19th century.

You can learn about the rich Viking history of the region at the Njardarheimr Viking Village, which is located in the centre of Gudvangen. Join a guided tour of the recreated village to hear stories of the Viking’s travels, culture and boats before trying your hand at axe throwing or archery. Authentic Viking food is also served on site.

One of the most magical ways to experience the Nærøyfjord is on a kayaking tour, surrounded by the fjord’s soaring mountains and waterfalls. Gaze up at the small mountain farms and keep your eyes peeled for seals playing on the rocks, together with domesticated goats that regularly graze along the shores.

Getting there

Gudvangen is just over two hours’ drive from Bergen and Bergen Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses are the main means of getting to Gudvangen, with the centre of the village compact enough to explore on foot.
