Where to stay in Gaupne

About Gaupne

Gaupne is a laid-back village set on the banks of Gaupnefjorden and surrounded by rugged mountains. The village is a gateway to the Luster municipality, where you’ll find shimmering glaciers, cascading waterfalls and pristine national parks.

Things to do

Old Gaupne Church is perched on a hilltop overlooking the village. The simple Lutheran façade contrasts with the ornate interior. Step inside to admire the hand-carved benches, elaborate altarpiece and colourful wall murals. Look for the carved dragons and snakes above the western portal.

Nigardsbreen Glacier cascades down to a turquoise-coloured lake and is an easy day trip from Gaupne. Guided glacier walks take you out onto the shimmering ice, while boat trips are also a great way to get up close with the glacier. In addition to protecting one of the largest glaciers in Europe, Jostedalsbreen National Park is laced with scenic hiking trails.

The National Tourist Route Sognefjellet starts in Gaupne and winds through the mountains to Lom. Parts of the road skirt Lusterfjord and take you past postcard-perfect towns and villages. You’ll also drive through one of the highest mountain passes in Scandinavia.

Getting around

Gaupne is compact and easy to get around on foot. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Bergen is a 4.5-hour drive away.
