Where to stay in Newcastle CBD, Newcastle

About Newcastle CBD

As part of the second largest city in New South Wales, Newcastle’s central business district (CBD) is naturally a bustling hub of activity in eastern Australia. From stellar surf breaks to suburban shopping centres, the area has its share of underrated attractions.

The Newcastle CBD proper is anchored by Hunter Street. This commercial centre approximately traces the route of a 19th century roadway and is currently dotted with specialty shops and independent art galleries. Nearby attractions are primarily coastal in nature and include the Bogey Hole ocean bath, 19th century Fort Scratchley and surfing hotspot Merewether Beach. The CBD has plenty of shopping opportunities, but larger centres such as Westfield Kotara and Stockland Glendale can be found in the city’s suburbs.

Newcastle is 162 kilometres north of Sydney. The area is well served by city buses from both Newcastle Buses & Ferries and Hunter Valley Buses. There are commuter trains and a larger rail service connecting the city to Brisbane and Sydney. A rapidly growing airport has a number of domestic routes, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, from its terminal 15 kilometres from the CBD.

Originally occupied by Worimi and Awabakal Aboriginal People, Newcastle was settled by Europeans at the turn of the 19th century. The area had a rough reputation for the time due to its coal industry, which relied heavily on convict labour.
